Governor Discusses Cigarette Tax Increase

The Courier-Journal reports that Governor Steve Beshear suggested that another increase in the cigarette tax could reduce smoking and be part of the solution to Kentucky’s budget problems.

Speaking to a group of Louisville business leaders, Governor Beshear said the state should “continue to look at increasing our cigarette tax” and noted that “no question it makes a lot of difference” in reducing smoking.

The newspaper reported that Beshear’s office “declined to say whether the governor would make a formal proposal to raise the tax again or how much he would like to see it go up.”
